Biography
Kyrgios Kyrgios Theophilos, the third patriarch of the Holy City and the rest of Palestine, was born in the town of Gargaliani in the Trivilia district of Mesenia in 1952. He came to Holy City in July 1964 and attended Patriarchal School, graduating in 1970.
On June 28, 1970, a monk was painted in the hands of Patriarch Venetectus I’s triangle in the Grand Patriarchate Hall and named “Theophilus”.
On July 1, 1970, by decision of the Holy Complex, he was sworn to deacon in the terrible galaxy by the mercy triangle of the Archbishop of the Jordan Basilius River, and was appointed deacon of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and after deacons of the Patriarch.
On July 1, 1975, he was named a priest in the terrible galaxy by the triangle of mercies, Archbishop of Erapolis. On the basis of the Holy Complex’s decision of 27 February 1975, he was sent to Athens to attend the Faculty of Theology at the University of Athens. On February 21, 1978, he became Archamendrite.
Upon completing his university studies, he returned to Holy City and was appointed Secretary of the Patriarchate’s Office, Teacher of the Patriarchate School and Supervisor of the Monastery of St. Kharalmbous on 12 October 1979. On 2 May 1981, he was appointed as a member of the committee overseeing the New Zion magazine.
On 22 December 1981 he was sent to Durham University in England to complete his higher studies, and, having successfully returned to Jerusalem in 1986, he was appointed Secretary of the Holy Complex on 12 August 1986 and in charge of the Patriarchate’s Information and Publications Office, as well as a member of the Zion Patriarchate School Committee. On 31 October 1986, a representative of the Patriarchate was appointed to the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches and participated in the Seventh General Meeting of the World Church Council in Kambera, Australia. From 1991 to 1996, he served as the spiritual President of Qana al-Jalil (Kafrakna). In 1997 he was appointed to the Court Committee, and that same year he was sent to Qatar. On 27 September 2000, he was appointed a member of the Holy Complex.
In September 2001 he was appointed as a Patriarchal Agent in Moscow. In July 2003 he was appointed as a Patriarchal Agent in Qatar.
On June 8, 2004, he was appointed to the Patriarchate’s First Ecclesiastical Court in Jerusalem, and in September of the same year, Skivovilex was appointed to the Grand Church of the Resurrection. On 14 February 2005, he was elected and his sovereignty took place.
On 9/22 August 2005, the Holy Complex was unanimously chosen as a patriarch of the Holy Orthodox Patriarchate. On 9/22 November 2005, his inauguration in Catholics was celebrated in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, with representatives of all Orthodox churches, as well as from the Jordanian Government and the Palestinian Authority, and the presence of His Excellency Mr. Carlos Papoulias, President of the Republic of Greece and His Highness Sheikh Qatar.
After his inauguration of a patriarch, in addition to his active activities to restore stability to the patriarchate’s work and progress for the life of the spiritual Christian Roman parish and the steadiness of holy places, he paid attention to raising the degree of participation of the Church of Jerusalem in Orthodox meetings to maintain church order in accordance with the laws of the Holy Church and strengthen the rights and role of the Church of Jerof Jerof Jerusalem.
Thus, in May 2006 in Geneva, he participated in the Expanded Complex for Succession to the Throne of the Church of Cyprus, and in the same month paid a friendly visit to the First Throne of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. In his personal presence, he also identified the restoration of the Archeological Church at the World Council of Churches and at the Council of Middle Eastern Churches.
In October 2007, at the invitation of the Government of the United States of America, the Conference of Religious Institutions in the Holy Lands took part in Washington, D.C., in order to advance the political peace process in the Holy Lands. He was interested in the completion of historical studies and translations on the history of the Church of Jerusalem, and participated as an invitee of several scientific conferences in Jerusalem and Greece.
In September 2008, at the invitation of the European Parliament, His Excellency went to Brussels, setting forth expectations and church problems in the sacred lands known to the leaders of Parliament and European committees. In October of the same year, he took part in the compound of those sitting on the thrones of the Orthodox Church in the ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. In 2009, he participated in London: “The C-1 World Dialogue”, where he was appointed Vice-President.
On the 10th day of June 2013, His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein granted Patriarch Kyrgios Kyrgios Theophilus III to the Patriarch of the Holy City, all the work of Palestine, Jordan and the High Order of Renaissance of First Class, in recognition of good qualities and interfaesthetic dialogue.
In 2014, during his friendly visit to the Roman Church, he was awarded by the President of the Republic of Romania with the honorable honour of the State, and his honorary doctoral grace was also honored by the University of Bucharest.
In September of the same year, the Patriarch’s joy participated in the meeting of the International Mixed Committee of the World Council of Churches for Theological Dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church held in the Jordanian capital of Amman.
On Pentecostal Day 2016, the patriarch participated in the work of the Great Holy Orthodox Complex held on Crete in Greece, accompanying members of the Patriarchate’s Holy Complex and a number of other parents and secular advisers.
In August of the same year, the patriarch invited and hosted the churches of the Middle East Council of Churches, chairing the conference held in the Jordanian capital, Amman, as president of the Orthodox Churches.
On 12 September 2016, His Excellency presided over the inauguration of St. John Vladimir’s Church in Montenegro with the participation of the Patriarch of Serbia Irenius, the Archbishop of Albania Anastasius and representatives of other Orthodox churches.
On 9 March 2017, the Patriarch presided over the ceremony held at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on the occasion of the completion of the restoration and repair of the Holy Tomb, which was carried out at the initiative of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem in agreement with the Franciscan fraternity and the Armenian Patriarchate and a team of lecturers and researchers at the Polytechnic University of Athens, chaired by researcher and lecturer Ms. Antonia Moropoulou and assisted by an architectural designer at the Church of the Resurrection. In September, he hosted representatives of the National Council of United States Churches in Jerusalem as President of Jerusalem Churches. In October he participated in the Second International Conference on Religious and Cultural Pluralism and Peaceful Coexistence in the Middle East, organized by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens.
On June 15, 2018, the Patriarch received His Highness Prince William of Cambridge. In October of the same year, the patriarch’s glee participated in the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Orthodox Academy in Crete and in the third meeting of the Academy’s partners. That same month, he participated in the “Sixth Conference of World Leaders and Traditional Religions” in Astana, Kazakhstan.
In November 2019, he traveled to Moscow, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the presence of the Patriarch of Moscow Kirill, and during his visit to Moscow, the International Foundation for the Unity of Orthodox Peoples granted his delight and the name of “Patriarch Alexios II.”
